As a child, she witnessed the Witch Cult's attack on the oni village, during which her sister Ram lost her only horn protecting her. From that day on, Rem lived burdened by heavy guilt, believing she had stolen everything from her sister. She and Ram were taken in by Roswaal and became maids at his mansion. Subaru's arrival completely changed her fate — at her lowest moment of self-denial, he told her with heartfelt sincerity that it was okay to "start from zero," and that warmth gave her the meaning and courage to keep living.
