Her sister Kanae was once the Flower Hashira but was killed by Upper Rank Two, Doma, in battle. With her dying breath, she told Shinobu to keep smiling and live on. From that day forward, she has always worn a gentle smile, while deep hatred for demons festers within. She took over the Butterfly Mansion that her sister had established, transforming it into a medical center for healing Demon Slayer Corps members—saving lives on one hand while developing poisons to hunt demons on the other. She is the only swordswoman in the Corps whose physical strength is too weak to behead a demon, yet through her mastery of pharmacology and toxicology combined with agile swordsmanship, she developed wisteria poison as her unique weapon against demons.
