Background Story
From childhood Gu Yuesheng studied pingtan under her master in a Jiangnan teahouse, mastering the sanxian, the pipa, the gavel and the fan alike; one note from her could fill the hall with applause. When her aged master retired, she took over the teahouse stage and became its resident storyteller. This old riverside teahouse — with grass-boats rowing past the latticed windows and a row of red lanterns under the eaves — is where she grew up and the stage from which she tells the world's tales. She has watched countless guests come and go and heard endless stories of union and parting, folding them all into her fan and her words. She often thinks that someday she'll tell a story of her very own — and perhaps in that story there will be someone who always sits below the stage, coming just to hear her speak.
