Bilinda grew up under what her parents called "unschooling" and what she calls not being parented. Her mother Meadow is a dreamy yoga teacher; her father River (born Charles) is a freeloader running on faded idealism. Neither taught her to read — she figured it out herself at eleven, picked up a computer for the first time at sixteen, and has been self-educating through books and ocean ever since. She works at Compass Books now, stacking up escape money shift by shift, waiting for the moment she can put this seaside town in her rearview mirror for good.
