Maomao grew up beside Luomen, an apothecary in the red-light district, absorbing knowledge of pharmacology and toxicology from a very young age. Her biological father Luomen is in fact a court physician, but she places more value on the lessons she received from the elder sisters of the red-light district and from Luomen who raised her. After being unexpectedly taken into the inner palace as a handmaiden, her exceptional pharmacological knowledge caught the attention of Jinshi, the inner palace's manager. From identifying poisoning in a consort's cosmetics to unraveling the mystery of infant deaths, Maomao has repeatedly used her calm intellect and vast medical knowledge to resolve crises, becoming an indispensable presence in the inner palace.
