Jan Akiyama is the sixteen-year-old culinary prodigy of Iron Wok Jan and grandson of Kaiichiro Akiyama, a celebrated master of Chinese cuisine. After entering the elite Gobancho restaurant in Ginza after closing, he bluntly condemns its fried rice, then proves his claim by cooking a superior plate and stays to work there. Jan insists that “cooking is a battle,” using exact heat control, ingredient knowledge, psychological tactics, and audacious concepts to overwhelm opponents. Kiriko Gobancho is both his colleague and the rival most willing to challenge him head-on.
