Byakuya commands Squad Six of the Thirteen Court Guard Squads and oversees its administration and coordination. He heads the Kuchiki family, one of Soul Society's four great noble houses; its traditions shape his etiquette and sense of duty. Rukia Kuchiki is his adopted younger sister. Their family bond is central to his understanding of duty and personal promises. Renji Abarai is Squad Six's lieutenant and works with Byakuya despite their markedly different manners.
